Music in pictures

A series of projections retracing the lives of the great figures of music through films and historical documentaries directed by leading producers. It's an opportunity to discover the musical universe of artists who have written the finest chapters in music history by retracing their successes and dazzling careers. It's also a chance to get to know the most intimate and profound aspects, the weaknesses, and the human and emotional side of these extraordinary personalities.

Two more events are devoted to the composer György Ligeti and the Berliner Philharmoniker's first major educational project conducted by Sir Simon Rattle.

Portrait de G. Ligeti
by Michel Follin (in French with English subtitles)

György Ligeti is undoubtedly what one might consider to be a cosmopolitan composer. So the theme of a train journey is an appropriate motif for this portrait of the musician's life and work. As Ligeti watches through the train's windows the changing rural and urban landscapes pass by, all of Europe's recent troubled but inventive cultural history also seems to be unfolding before our eyes.
