The series of new works presented by Thomas Huber in the exhibition “Lago Maggiore” springs from a homecoming: the artist’s return to the landscapes of Switzerland.

For some years now, the artist, who lives in Berlin, has spent long periods of the year in a small village on the Italian-Swiss border. And since then, like a sort of visual diary, he has been painting and drawing the view from his studio window every day, at different times of day. His view of the lake inspired the works in the show: potentially endless variations on the same landscape in which mountains, water, sky and light are traversed by the natural rhythm of the seasons and the progression of the day.

While retaining the vivid colours and well-defined shapes typical of his work, these large oils on canvas have something boundless about them. They herald a departure from his previous practice - beguiling architectural structures rich in mise-en-abyme - and seem to extend beyond the canvas, creating an immersive experience. The pieces in the show celebrate the beauty and simplicity of the landscape, and are an invitation to observe and contemplate, uplifting the spirit.
The layout of the exhibition, developed in close collaboration with the artist, also includes a body of watercolours featuring perspective representations of spaces and places, and mysterious plays of light and shadow. This series is presented in a "room within the room", a more intimate space in the large hall that plays host to the exhibition.
The exhibition offers a new angle on Thomas Huber’s work, in a seamless continuum which adds another interesting element to his complex, long-established practice.
